Only speakerphone works

Suddenly phone audio stopped working. Can only hear or speak to people with speakerphone.

If I start a phone call with the earpiece plugged in, the earpiece works. If I plug the earpiece in during a call, it drops the call. Oddly, when I plug in the earpiece, it fires up the Ipod app and starts playing, regardless of what screen I was on.

But the ear speaker does not work in any instance. I think physically the ear speaker is functional, that somehow the phone is tricked into not communicating during the normal (non-speakerphone, non-earpiece) setting.

I have turned off phone and reset multiple times.

Any guesses?

Try inserting and removing your headphones several times. This sometimes can remedy this situation.

There is a little switch in the headphone that gets stuck sometimes. So your phone thinks the earphones are plugged in.

When trying to answer or make a call I have to hit the speaker icon if I don't I hear nothing and neither does the caller
Any suggestions other than the headphone trick? I've never used the headphones or Bluetooth
