So, as a part of the keynote, I believe it was Tim Cook that announced that the purchase of all new iDevices would allow for the free download of Pages, Numbers and Keynote. My son just got a new 5th Generation iPod Touch. He has tried to DL those apps, but when he pulls them up in the app store, it is still wanting to charge him for them.

ANyone know the trick to getting these free? I thought it was supposed tobe effective immediately.

Was his iPod Touch activated after September 1st?
  1. iPhoto, iMovie, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers are free on the App Store for qualifying iOS 7 compatible devices activated as of September 1, 2013. See www.apple.com/ios/whats-new/for iOS 7 compatible devices. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID.

It was just activated Sunday. He finally got it to download.

Anyone know if, now that these apps are tied to his Apple id, if he logs into one of my devices, will the App Store allow him to download them to my device?

Go to the keynote and start watching from about the 18:30 mark. As it hits around 18:55, Tim Cook says, "So today, we are announcing, that we're making all five of these industry leading apps FREE. They're free with any new iOS device."....."This is for any new iPad, or any new iPhone, or 5th Generation iPod Touch. We think this will be great for our customers." The other 2 apps he's including when he says "all 5" are iMovie and iPhoto.

No.....It won't they are too smart. I downloaded them in my new 5S and when I went to restore my backup I didn't get the option to "transfer purchases that are in my device to iTunes"

I thought about the same thing too beforehand

Actually, it worked just fine. I went to the App Store last night on my account and they were wanting $9.99 each for them. When I logged out my account and had him log in, they were downloadable with no problem and no fees.

Exactly they are for the owner of the new device. When you tried to do it you couldn't get it. He tried and it worked. It's his iPod

Yes, but after he installed them on his new iPod, I had him log into my iPad 2 and he was able to download them to my device too.

Oh well that's pretty slick. Now for the App Store we all share the same account I wonder if there is a way I can still do it.

If you're son gets them for free and now I have it with my Apple ID then I don't see how that should make a difference

Yeah, this is a trick my kids have learned to get various games on multiple devices with their siblings and friends.

They used to download games on my iPad with their own accounts but I had to bar that practice because updating required their passwords and it wasn't worth the hassle.

Yes, once you've downloaded it on one device, it will tie it to your iTunes account as "Paid for". So, as long as you are signed in to another device with that same Apple ID, it should download without problem.

Wow it worked.

Just did it on a 4th generation iPod with iOS 6

Downloading iMovie as it type. It showed the price briefly then changed to the iCloud icon
