Just got my first iPad since iOS 9 and I've been trying to get the picture in picture to work. Per Apple's website, while watching a video you can tap the home button and the video will shrink to a corner of the screen and then you can open another app and still watch the video. For me, tapping on the home button just closes the video. What's the trick?

What kind of video? YouTube or from the Apple videos app?
Also, which iPad? Pic in pic only works with Pro, Air, Air 2 and the 2,3&4 mini

OK, sorry. Per Apple's website, "While using FaceTime or watching a video, press the Home button and your video screen scales down to a corner of your display."
I'm using the 9.7" iPad Pro. The website doesn't specify what video or from where. I just tried a youtube video.

OK, upon further research I found that youtube doesn't yet support PiP, nor does Netflix. Most videos in Safari, however do. As well as videos from Apple's Videos App and FaceTime.
