plastic protective flim over iPhone front?

i'm not understanding this plastic protective cover that everyone is talking about that mutes speaker volume.

are you talking about the plastic wrap it came in? how can you mistake not taking that off or use the phone with it still on?

or are you talking about a protective layer that is very hard to see and you have to scratch and scratch at it to get it off, like a pickguard protective plastic on a new guitar?

i don't think mine had one of those...i can't see it, and the speaker on the front top isn't obscurred. i've tried scratching on the front just to see if there was a protective layer and i don't think mine has (or had) one.

this is weird. enlighten me, please.

no one who has been complaing about poor sound and resolved it by taking this plastic off can respond to this?

I believe that they are talking about the original plastic film that comes on the phone. For some reason, some people do not remove the protective film before using it (don't know why).
