I have some music I've downloaded from the internet that is currently in my Downloads Folder on my MacBook Pro.

Do I understand correctly that once I drag and drop that music into iTunes that those files are copied to another folder, and at that point I now have 2 copies of those songs/albums on my MBP? So I'm OK to delete the copy in the Downloads folder without affecting my ability to play that song in iTunes and/or sync it to my iDevices?

Correct. You can delete them from the downloads folder after importing them in iTunes.

If you want to check, right click on the songs in iTunes, and select "View in Finder/Explorer". This will show you which music file is linked with the entry in the iTunes Library.

Just to clarify a point... make sure "copy to iTunes folder is selected before you delete the music from your downloads folder, or it will all go away.
