I've always used QuickPWN in the past and I've never JB a phone that wasn't activated and using an AT&T SIM.

I just upgraded to a 3GS, so my 3G has "no service". Should I move the 3GS SIM to the 3G to JB? If not, will it activate later when I put a valid SIM in it?

It should be alright if you but the 3GS sim in the 3G to jailbreak. If you try it, let us know how it goes.

you shouldn't need to mess with the sim at all.

I restored my 3G and after the restore, I had to insert the sim to get past the connect to iTunes screen....after that, I took the sim back out and put it back in the 3GS and proceeded to jailbreak my 3G with no SIM installed

I put the SIM in just in case. It worked fine but I prefer QuickPWN because it's so much faster and doens't require a complete restore on an already recently restored device. I went the quick route and didn't make a custom .ipsw. I wish I would have though, because the standard .ipsw it makes includes the pineApple boot logo.
