Question about Handoff / Video demonstrating Handoff in action

A question comes to mind: What if I'm composing an e-mail on my iMac, but I want to use Handoff to continue that same e-mail on my MacBook Air, because, for example, I have to leave the house immediately and go to Starbucks for a coffee and continue composing my e-mail there. Can I Handoff the task from my iMac to my MacBook Air (i.e. Yosemite-to-Yosemite)? Or would I have to Handoff the task from my iMac to my iPhone, and then from my iPhone to my MacBook Air (i.e. Yosemite-to-iOS-to-Yosemite)? It would be great if it were possible to cut out the "middle man" and Handoff straight from Yosemite-to-Yosemite, but I haven't seen this scenario mentioned anywhere on the 'net yet.

Bonus: Watch a video of Handoff in action below. This is not an excerpt from Apple's WWDC 2014 keynote, but rather, a brand new demo posted on the YouTube channel of Mac4EverOfficiel.
