Danger! Don't throw those junky cell phones in the trash!

Just a friendly reminder that your cell phones contain toxic metals and other bad stuff you don't want to end up in our air or water supply. Please bring all your obsolete electronics to free recycling bins, which can be found at most office supply stores like Staples and OfficeMax, and big electronic retailers like Best Buy and Circuit City.

See this article for a great write-up on the issue:

Thank you, and enjoy your new iPhones!

Also even if you have a phone with a disabled account, 911 will still work. So I put my old phones with a car power cord into all my vehicles. In case I forget my everyday carry phone, phone gets stolen/broke, etc.

you can also try places like http://ripmobile.com/ or http://www.collectivegood.com/

ripmobile gives you some money/gift cards for old phones, collectivegood recycles them

both are owned by the same company. i sent in an old treo650 to ripmobile last week. got 61bux in credit. if i buy an iPhone i may sell my moto Q to them as well. they either refurb and distribute the phones to people who need them, or recycle them
