yeah, took me a while too. oh well, i just did it while i was watching tv.

the main reason it took so long was because the backup takes like 20-25 minutes for me :\

stop sending diagnostic info to Apple, it will decrease backup/sync time, so I've heard. I clicked no to that option when I synced with iTunes for the first time, it never takes more than 5 min to backup and sync my phone

My phone is still new so I don't know if thats an issue, but my back ups have never taken more than 2-4 minutes maximum.

Age of the phone doesn't matter, iTunes asks you if you want to send diagnostic info to Apple the very first time you connect your phone to iTunes at home, I was told that if you selecred "yes" then backups and syncs take forever

but my back ups have never taken more than 2-4 minutes maximum.
I selected "no" and have the same results as you 2-4 min tops.

It took me an hour and 45 minutes to update the breakdown goes as follows:
10 min download software
5 min to sync
1 hour and 20 minutes to backup
10 minutes to update
Updating to 2.0.1 - ridiculous
