Basically, I'd like a clean install of iOS 8.x but I'd like to only keep text message database intact.

I was thinking of jail breaking, pulling the db, then reinstalling on a clean iOS 8.

Possible?

Yes. You can use iFile or Filza on the phone itself or Cyberduck or WinSCP via SSH or DiskAid on a computer to get access to the file system. The file location is var/mobile/library/SMS. Save the whole SMS folder and then replace it after the restore. You'll also need to change the file permissions. I was just thinking about it and this actually isn't possible unless you use your backup since there currently isn't a jailbreak for 8.2. If you restore the firmware, you'll lose your jailbreak and won't be able to add the backed up SMS to the file system. If you restore and use your backup, your old texts will all be there.
