Is there any way to save a Word file on a mini IPad? Maybe through an app? Trying not to have to carry a PC with me.

Have a Dropbox account? That would be an option. Or maybe email it to yourself and save the email?

I agree. Dropbox, or Box, or SkyDrive, or Google Drive are all great options. In addition, there are many many apps that open a word document.

Do you need to have it stored locally so it can be edited or just have access to it?

Mate just download the app i-annotate and when you open the word document tell it to open in i-annotate, then you can edit it and so on and re-save it. I do this all the time with word and pdf's.

If its just for reference, you could save it as a PDF and put it into iBooks?
