The lower half of my screen stopped responding to touch. From the
row with the clock on down my screen is dead to touch, I can not even
answer a call. I tried a few resets and when I got home a restore.
Is there anything else I can try? If not, do I bring it back to AT&T Wireless
Store where I bought it?

Did you get ANY water near it.. ie. installing a full body skin, screen protector (Both sometimes use a mild soapy water solution to adjust the protector) , sweat, any thing that could have seeped in along the screen, in even the tiniest amount? Just curious. I had this happen twice to me, and I did install a full body skin, and I was wondering if it was related.

I'd like to know if 2 of my phones touchscreens died due to moisture intrusion, even in the tiniest amount.

Well, I was using the phone texting and made a few calls prior
to the screen not responding. As in with in 5 minutes or so of
putting my phone back into my pocket. I went to text and that
was it...dead. No water, no drop, no nothing.

AT&T Wirless was useless and a tad bit rude. I called the 1-800
number and by Friday I will have a loaner and do the old switch-a-roo.
I went ahead and got the Apple Care Protection Plan while I was at it.
I hope when all is said and done I will not have any more issues.

Well today at 2pm FedEX delivered my loaner. Now I just have
to drop of my broke phone to the FedEX shop. I am surprised
how fast the process is going thus far.

I just can not stop laughing at the SIM removal tool that Apple sent
in the kit. I hope this iPaperClip is patented properly.

Shipped my broke phone out at 4pm yesterday 08-02-07.
Today I get home from work with a reply from Apple waiting :)
  • Step 1 - Request
Product received by repair center (03-Aug-2007)
  • Step 2 - Service
    Product Replaced (03-Aug-2007)

  • Step 3 - Return
    Product shipped (03-Aug-2007)
Shipped via FedEx Air with tracking number ##########
If they replaced it, why did they not just have me keep the
loaner. It seems to be brand new.

FedEx states I will have my package Monday :)

I have to ask.... is Apple this way with all its products?

I had a screen problem too. Bottom of the screen wouldn't react to touch..

Actually i was able to unlock barely but it took ALOT of feeling around and sliding to get it to do that, but the lower icons wouldn't work.

I had initially thought it had something to do with new skin i modded to it, but the problem was still there AFTER restoring it.

I took the phone to Apple Store and they shipped my phone out and rented a loaner to me. I hope they won't find out i modded the phone and void my warranty  ... everything LOOKS like its back to stock, so i don't know.

I'll know by monday or tuesday.

If you look on the back of the loaner, it should have "AppleCare Service" branded above "iPhone". They give you the loaner out of their fedex box that they end up shipping YOUR phone in, and in turn ship back to you.

My loaner was brand new, but i'd assume they would loan used ones in the future.

The only mods I had were rings. But I did not re-add them after I updated.
I was a little worried if there was a blackbox of sorts on the phone, guess not.

*QUICK EDIT*
@Street ..... thanks for the info, I never noticed it said that on the back.
And yes, I did have to check in disbelief. Forgive me *lowers head*

Well, final verdict.

Phone Replacement under Warranty!

About 2:30pm Thursday they took my phone at the Apple Store. I got my phone sometime this morning. (Saturday)

My error was bottom part of screen (whole slider lock area) woulding take input. I had modded my phone before using various skins and added ringtones and gave my phone back restored. Apparently they couldn't tell i've modded after a restore. :) If they could, i would make it policy to check... they'd be saving on giving brand new phones to dirty modders like me.

I hade the same issue, I just went to Apple today they are sending in the phone for repair, I tried soft rebooting, and restoring and the dead bottom was affecting me not being able to unlock the phone. There was no way I was going to pay 30 bucks for a replacement phone for 2-3 days, they popped out my sim and I put it in my old phone and it worked :) hopefully they will send me a new phone and not just try to repair the piece of crap phone I already had, Id rather have a new phone than a refurbished one after 30 days that is pretty riddiculous they would even charge for a loaner during that time. I also hope this is a rare issue as I have heard most people after performing a soft reset have fixed the problem.
