So I posted a thread earlier last week about my touch panel being cracked. I went to the Apple store today and was told version 1 iPhones were only fixed due to it being a piece of research. iPhone 3g will not be fixed at Apple stores and wont be dealt with with issues like cracking touch panel. So, I was told to go to websites like pdaparts.com and etc to get the part. Basically Apple is far beyond bullshitting with 3g issues and repairs.

can someone confirm this? I would think APPLE would like to make an easy $199+tax off of ppl with broken screens.

Wow, I have never heard of this. Normally they give you a replacement and send the other one to the depot to get parted out

That is odd that he would say that though

Well, did they deem it not to be a manufacturing defect, but an "accident" beyond their liability? If so, I could kinda understand that.

The glass is much easier to replace on the 3G, though. By "much easier" I mean "you can actually do it yourself"

I wasn't trying to make a warranty claim of it. I just wanted to be able to get it fixed.

Yeah, well some of the geniuses will sometimes replace it if they are in a good mood, but they usually do not

o i c!

Well that is pretty harsh then. You'd think they could at least service a brand new product?

If you were to purchase a new phone in a situation like this, would you still be able to get it at the subsidized price or would you have to pay the full 499/599?

KB was referring to the actual price, not the subsidized one.
And I got the feeling k3 was talking about Apple's repair price. They charge more (299) to service a 16gig, right?

My experience has been that it really boils down to which Genius Bar associate handles your particular case. Most often they bend over backwards to retain your businesss but on occasion you'll get a jerk. If I didn't get the answer I was looking for I'd do exactly what you did - go to another store and hope you get a more caring associate the second time around.

I think that in addition to which genius you get, service is generally better when you go in with a pleasant attitude. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
