I use secure ports with my POP servers. Instead of ports 110 and 25, we use port 995 for POP and port 465 for SMTP. Can the iPhone handle a secure POP port?

Transferring sensitive mail "in the clear" is not acceptable and many go through a secure channel like I use. If you are a teenager chatting with your buddies, having your mail transmissions easliy viewed at your favorite hotspot might not be a problem. For businesss users with sensitive data, this is a problem thus our use of secure channels.

So can the mail app handle the secure channel, or is it just for casual mail?

No problem setting alternative Ports on your POP and SMTP settings, you just add :995 onto your pop server address and :465 onto your SMTP address.

You can also independently select incoming and outgoing SSL, as well as MD5 Challenge response, NTLM and good old Password for authorization.
