Hey so I got my iPhone for a gift about four days ago and I love it...but it has crashed three times since I got it. I have to end up holding the buttons to restart it...I assume it's not supposed to do that this often...its updated and all, so is there something I can do to fix this?

No, that's not normal.
New or used iPhone? What model? Is it jailbroken or unlocked? What were you doing when it crashed?

Its a brand new iPhone...and I am not sure what you mean by jailbroken. And the model...I assume you mean 3G? Sorry heh iPhone newbie here. And when it happens, I just finish texting or doing anything really, then it goes to sleep on its own, try to push the button to wake it up, and nothin.

I have had this happen if I send a text and shut the phone off before the text is sent. A hard reboot is the only thing that brings it back.

I think it might be a bug in 3.1.

I was thinking it was a bug. Also I did a full restore on it last night, clearly that didn't work heh.

Did it only ever happen when you were texting? Perhaps we can narrow this down...

Well it has happened not while texting, but after. I text and push the sleep button, put it down, and it doesn't wake up. But its not just only after texting, its after doing pretty much anything. It just randomly decides to turn itself off.

You said it happened three times though? How quickly in a row? Was only one time right after sending a text?

Yeah once it was after a text, and bump that number up to four, it just happened three minutes ago. And the first time it happened, it went about 26 hours without doing it again. These last few though have happened within 4 hours of each other.

And what were you doing right before the other 3 times?

Usually messing with some apps, or looking in the app store. Thats pretty much all I was doing.

Are you a heavy texter, though? When you rebooted your phone, did a text come through by chance?

Hmmm, well I'd still place my money on messaging being the issue, especially with the addition of MMS. Let's see if any others chime in with similar issues...

The same thing ...

Not to hijack the thread but a friend of mine just had his 3G replaced because his was doing the same thing. He isn't aware of the behavior being associated with a specific app but he can exit any app, hit the sleep button and the iPhone appears to go to sleep. However, he has to press & hold the sleep & home buttons to restart. This was happening before he updated to 3.1 last week.

We went to the Apple store because of a problem with his MBP which is still there awaiting repair. He had previously scheduled a second appointment for the phone on the heels of the first one. The Genius did a backup to a store MBP and gave him a replacement 3G. He has been re-loading his paid & free apps OTA & via WiFi since then. About an hour ago he discovered that Shopper loaded with the same data items he had had before. After quitting the app and pressing the sleep button, this replacement phone did the same thing as had the previous one.

The Genius suggested that there might be some corrupt data in the backup file. Tonight's behavior seems to confirm that.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or words of wisdom.

Hasn't happened any more to me. I don't send many texts, though...

Mine does the same thing. It seems to be totaly random.

I text a lot, and do everything else a lot as well; so its tough to narrow it down to any specific action. My phone is about two weeks old, is not jailbroken, has the MMS mod and just a few random applications installed. Version is 3.1. When I got the phone I was on 3.0, and recal it doing it on that version as well. Maybe its a bug they will work out?

Also.... sometimes the phone will feeze up and come back on its own, but is somehow in screen capture mode. Everytime I hit the home or power button it takes a screen shot?
