    Hey guys,

I just got a 3GS, my first iPhone, and I'm already having issues. Is the silver/metal button on the top left hand corner suppose to silent your ringtone when a call comes in?
I tried calling the iPhone and pressing that button when the it was ringing and nothing happened, it still kept on playing the ringtone.

    Thanks in advance guys

The button you refer to is on the top of the phone, on the right. It silences incoming calls, or can be pressed twice to ignore them among other things. By what you are saying, I am thinking you were pressing the ringer switch that is above the volume rocker. The ringer switch has an on and off position, and is not a button.

I think he is referring to the vibration switch.

To the OP, it is not a button, it is a switch. Try flicking it.

He was referring to a physical switch, but referencing it as a button. My post told him where to locate what he was looking for and gave him the purpose of the switch that he was using.

The switch, when flipped toward the back, silences the ring for new calls only. When one is coming in in normal mode, it's the sleep button you must press.
