It seems as if the speed of my phone (in navigating around, starting/closing apps, etc) has become slower over time.

Is this just simply the iPhone aging, or are there certain things I could be doing to slow the phone down?

Would be nice to know which version phone you have and is it stock or JB.
Otherwise, do you shut the phone down and restart at least once a week? That alone helps keep the phone running smoothly.

hmm I dunno the answer to either of those questions, except that its a 3G, (and not 3G S). And I don't routinely restart the iPhone...

well, off the top, you should probably reboot every 2-3 days. I do, either right before going to sleep, or first thing in the morning after I take it off the charger.
You probably are not jailbroken if you don't know what that is, but to find out the firmware version, go into Settings, then General, and then About. The version is listed there. Current version is 3.1
