So I've switched carriers, to a very nice surprise...

I've been with Rogers for 7 years, and the connection kept on dropping, the reception was never more than 3 bars (usually 1 bar at home), and when I phoned them to inquire about the iPhone 5, the customer service specialist claimed that I failed to give her my proper name, so she couldn't even check my upgrade eligibility. The reason I have decided to upgrade instead is due in fact that they are no longer offering unlocked iPhone 5's at the Apple Store (but only online), and I want to get one on launch day. So today, I drive to the Rogers store, and present my ID, tell them my account information, and my name is correct on the account! I'm a bit peeved, so I storm out of the store, and then I look up to see the "Bell" (another carrier) store right across the hallway in the mall. I decide to walk in and inquire about a month-to-month plan, asked about if it was possible to get a plan immediately not on contract, then come in at the end of the week and grab an iPhone 5 subsidized. "Totally possible". So I go ahead and get the month-to-month plan, port my number and swap the SIM in my iPhone to theirs (my phone is factory unlocked), and I instantly have incredible reception! 5 bars solid, not even bouncing between 4 and 5 at all. I was super impressed at this. Then the guy gets to talking about upgrading to the iPhone 5:

Him: "So what color and size are you getting?"
Me: "I'd like a black 64GB, I'll take white too, but it must be at least 64GB, as I have over 40GB worth of data on my current iPhone."
Him: "Oh, 64GB? Piece of cake, no one's really ordered that size and we have an abundance coming in, so we'll just hold one for you on the 21st and you can come in anytime on that day to sign a 3-year contract and have it in your hands!"
Me: "Oh, well...wait, what? You'll just hold one for me?"
Him: "...yes?"
Me: "You mean, no reservation? I mean this is days after the pre-order has happened and you can guarantee me an iPhone 5 on the 21st without me having to die in 28 degree weather overnight? Really?!"
Him: "Yep, no problem."
Me: "Wow, I love this carrier already."

Back at home, my reception is still a solid 5 bars, when my old carrier was only 1! I've never seen my old carrier go anywhere above 4 anywhere in the city, but to not see this one drop below 5 yet is amazing. And the service I received was on par with their reception too!

Now for that $500+ early termination fee from my old carrier, that's another story. Oh well, I'm still happy!

Yeowch. What, did you just sign the contract, or do they not whittle away at the ETF based on how long you've got left on the contract?

3 year contract!? Good lord!
Yeah, unfortunately it's the norm in Canada. I've got friends in Canada who've had to pass on the 4S and will have to pass on the 5 because they're still under contract with the iPhone 4.

It's so much worse up there than it is down here, I almost forget that sometimes in my blind rage against AT&T.

It's the maximum I'm expecting to pay for that contract. It could be less, as there was still just under 2 years left on the thing.

The ETF is ~$15/month short of ~24 months for the big three carriers; Rogers, Telus, Bell. Also with luck and persistent negotiating you can normally get this discounted if not waived as part of a contract renewal and new phone subsidy.

In effect, you have a 2 yrs hardware subsidy term with 3 yrs service commits short of an early renewal.

It's also good to remember that if you shop you should be able to find a carrier/franchise rep that will subsidize your ETF fee on top of the hardware subsidy, to get you to flip carriers.

And lastly you can leverage the competitive ETF subsidy when negotiating with your existing carrier.

In any case, good that you're reception has improved.

Geez. I wish we had that over here. Our Contract prices range from £36 - £70 for an iPhone(doesn't matter whether its a 4 4s or even a 5!) and I think it's ridiculous. The more you pay on your line rental the chaepaer the phone.
