I've been seeing news reports from various sources that Steve Jobs has resigned. Is it true?

This is sad, I hope it's nothing to do with his health, which probably is.

Looks like it is true. He is moving to a role as chairman. Hopefully this means less stress on his health and a better role where he still has a lot of influence.

His resignation letter, posted by Guy Kawasaki on Google+:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple''s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple''s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Hate seeing that first line.

I'm rather stunned, although I knew this day would come. Stock is down around 6 percent After Hours. I wish Steve Jobs the very best. I'm sure Apple will continue to do what it always does best - make innovative products that people love.

I just hope it was not forced because of health reasons! The guy is good at what he does regardless of his rep

Apple is much more than Steve Jobs. They'll be fine.

Jobs inspired a generation of innovators all over the world, and helped make things like the PC, smart phone and the tablet a global mainstream necessity. Ultimately, he brought joy, happiness and even wealth to millions through amazing and innovative products. Plain and simple, he changed the world, for the better. He's been and always will be my idol. Anyway, it's not like he's leaving. He'll still be chairman of the board. Just like Sinatra!

We knew it was coming. Everyone did. His health has been in question for what a year now?
