I have an iPhone 5 and was wondering why won't my usage update? I deleted a ton of pictures and my messages which were the two things that took the most space. And I went back to settings to check and those two things show the same number.

Try a hard reboot on the device. Press and hold the home & sleep buttons at the same time. Let both go when you see the Apple logo. See if that helps

How many photos would you say you have on your device? Rough estimate? It's late and it was an early morning, but I'm thinking maybe you haven't deleted enough to make a dent?

If you are trying to clear space, what about syncing with your computer and deleting the images from your iPhone. Get things squared away and then sync the photos that matter most back to your iPhone.
