As soon as you start the iPod, the only way I can figure out how to stop the music is by putting it on pause. I know that when I do this that the iPod continues to run in the background taking up battery and memory. Is there anyway to completely stop the iPod and take it out of memory until I wanna play it again?

Thats how everything in the iPhone works, when u open up something else, you are simply task switching.

Not sure if it takes up more battery.

I know if you hold down home button for like 10 seconds, it will turn off all the application. It doesn't work when you are already in Home tho.
