Hello,
I had an iPhone 3g that my son decided to put in the water and to make a story short, the phone does not work and is dead and too expensive fix.

I bought another iPhone from a friend and I need to unlock it so It can be used with Fido instead of Rogers in Canada.

Here are my big questions:

1. How do I know what version of the firmware the iPhone has ( I ask this cause it tells me that I need to put a sim card before letting me do anything, and of course my sim cant be use yet, thus, not being able to get to the settings)

2. Once I find the firmware version of the iPhone, is it possible to do it myself or would be in my best interest to have some professional do it? ( keep in mind that I have jailbroken my first iPhone)

3. If something goes bad, would I be able to restore it? (in this case, would my friend be able to restore it for me?

Thanks for your help.

chances are the iPhone is either on 2.2 or 2.2.1. if it is on 2.2 it can be unlocked, and if it is on 2.2.1 there is a 99% chance it cannot be unlocked. this is what you are gonna have to do, its a little guessing game.

you are gonna have to jailbreak it to activate it and then unlock it. there are two versions of quickpwn that you are gonna have to download and install. you might as well download both the 2.2 and 2.2.1 firmware as well, since you don't know what this is on and you have to have it downloaded to your comp in order to jailbreak (note, pay attention and download the quickpwn version either for a mac or windows pc, depending on what you are using).

so download these files:

quickpwn 2.2.5 IF YOU ARE USING A MAC
http://quickpwn2-2-1.googlecode.com/files/QuickPwn_2.2.5.dmg

quickpwn 2.2.5 IF YOU ARE USING WINDOWS
http://quickpwn2-2-1.googlecode.com/files/QuickPwn-225-2.zip

quickpwn 2.2 IF YOU ARE USING A MAC
http://www.zshare.net/download/517216491efea4ed/

quickpwn 2.2 IF YOU ARE USING WINDOWS
http://jmcoon.net/QuickPwn22.zip

iPhone 3g 2.2.1 Firmware
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...90127.aQLi8/iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw

iPhone 3g 2.2 Firmware
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...0081120.Aqw4R/iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw

so once you have a version of quickpwn 2.2.5 downloaded, a version of quickpwn 2.2 downloaded, and the 2.2.1 firmware as well as the 2.2 firmware you can get started.

open up quickpwn 2.2.5 and plug your iPhone in, it will test it and if it allows you to move forward then your iPhone is on 2.2.1 firmware and you can proceed to jailbreak. if it doesn't let you proceed close down that and open quickpwn 2.2. if that allows you to proceed then you are on 2.2 firmware. follow the jailbreak steps on quickpwn and when you are done post up your results and i will help you with the unlocking process.
