What do you call the first iPhones? I've seen V1 and 2G and I guess we could call them EDGE iPhones.

The thing is 2G isn't accurate since EDGE isn't really 2G. It's 2.75G or at least 2.5G.

wikipedia said:
Some protocols, such as EDGE for GSM and CDMA2000 1x-RTT for CDMA, can qualify as "3G" services (because they have a data rate of above 144 kbit/s), but are considered by most to be 2.5G services (or 2.75G which sounds even more sophisticated) because they are several times slower than "true" 3G services.

So what do you call the old iPhones? And please don't say paperweight. :laugh2:

I've just been calling it the "V1 iPhone" or just "V1."

I just call it iPhone. The new one is iPhone 3G, and the old is just iPhone.

I like V1... seems to be widely recognized and clear.

It's confusing to call the first gen iPhone "V1", and by implication, the 3G "V2", especially since iPhone 2.0 can run on "V1" as well as on the 3G. Confused? My point exactly. I'll go with "1st Gen" or "Classic" iPhone.

2 months later...

And this is precisely why I asked this poll question. Everybody and his great aunt is NOW INCORRECTLY calling the v1 iPhone the 2G.

But at the time of this writing only one person said that they call their old iPhone the 2G while 15 people (a staggering 60% of) respondants called it the v1.

What happened? I'll bet if more people take this poll now, we will see 2G take the lead. So aggravating. Good thing the smart guys who so smugly answered v1 before can't take the poll again.

I have still never referred to my v1 iPhone as a 2G iPhone. Thankfully I'm one of those smart guys that can't vote for v1 again.
