Up in the left corner, where the wi-fi signal is, it some times comes up an E , what is it and what does it do?
  2. E means the Edge network which is very slow compared to wifi.

Edge is one of 2 networks used by AT&T. This network is what allows you to make phone calls and connect to the internet. The other network is called 3G, this network is what the iPhone 3G uses (obviously), and can be considerably faster than edge when surfing the web, depending on your location.

If you are on wifi and for some reason get a weak signal, the phone will switch to edge until the wifi signal is stronger.

You may also be receiving the E if you have 3G specifically turned off. Go to Settings - General - Cellular, and make sure Enable 3G is turned On.
