"Hold the power button (top of phone) and the home button at the bottom of the phone at the same time. This will hard reset it."

is this like a reformat that deletes everything to factory settings or what?

i had to do it once when my screen froze. I was worried i may lose my songs, movies etc...thought it may go to factory settings, but as far as I can tell nothing really changed as far as settings, and my songs and everything are fine

i think the only way you can do a real factory reset is when you hook up your iPhone to iTunes. There is an option to do a restore i think on the summary screen

It basically reboots your phone, just like restarting your computer.

Hold those two buttons until you see the Apple log and let go.

It fixed an odd problem I was having with mail.
