Should you not restore a backup as it's a new model?
Thanks

I wouldn't. Not sure if the 3Gs will have a different OS than the 3G. That certainly was the case for the V1. The V1's descriptor includes 1,1. The 3G's descriptor includes 1,2. I am assuming that the 3Gs will be 2,1.

At the very least, you run the risk of a very unstable phone.

Setting up from a backup doesn't reuse the operating system; it just reloads your saved preferences and some data. It should theoretically work just fine.

That being said, I'm gonna set up as a new phone, because I'll enjoy entering all my settings for the first time. And this way I'll have peace of mind knowing I have a vanilla install to work with.

Definitely do NOT do it if you were jailbroken before.

I'm going to try and resotre my backup first. If I notice any weirdness, I'll restore as new.

I'm just going to start it off as new. Syncing is not a problem with my Mac so it won't take that long.

I'm really hoping syncing goes faster with the faster device. The current generation is nowhere near the USB 2.0 spec with regards to transfer speed.

OMG syncing my v1 with my computer is horrible. And I have USB 2.0. This better be 2x as fast at least.

I'm still not sure what to do on the back-up vs. clean install situation...

I always make it a habit to start from new if it's a new major firmware version (like 3.0) or it's a new device. I just don't want to chance any old stuff hanging around which could cause issues.

I'm going to restore from backup and hope that my MMS still works.
