I was thinking of someone like Woody Guthrie...
Same here. Those Springsteen Seeger Sessions feature old songs from Pete Seeger (who was a contemporary of Guthrie I think) and a version of 'This Land Is Your Land' etc. I'm not sure where the lines are between gospel and folk on some of the stuff, but love tracks like 'This Little Light of Mine', 'Pay Me My Money Down' and this one:

That is way out, although, at my age, I shouldn't really consider it as folk.
