Hello! I just purchased the 64GB iPad Air 2. I am just curious why there is almost 10gigs missing? Is there any way to recover any of that? I haven't even installed anything yet, and it's already down to 54 gb. Any help would be much appreciated, and thank you.

Not really. Most is the OS and other necessary stuff. Most of the bloatware apps don't take very much space. Most with a 64 gb phone start with about 56 gb.
Actually, less than half of the "missing space" on the 32 GB and higher is the OS and stock apps. It's explained very well in the link I posted. The complete file for the OS is only about 2 GB. OTA updates require much more space than that, but that is just working space for installation that is freed up after the install. The bulk of the missing space can be attributed to how the OS calculates difference between GBs and GiBs. This is why the more memory a device has, the more that appears to be missing.

Yeah, my point was that it wasn't the apps. I think iBooks is about 42 mb. But the rest hardly take space at all.

You said "most is the OS and other necessary stuff," which is not true. Only 1/4 of that "missing 8 GB" it is the OS and other necessary stuff on the 64 GB. They sell it as 64 GB, but it's really only about 58 GB due to formatting and the way the space is calculated. The OS and apps bring it down from 58 to 56.

Is there another way for them to do it? Is formatting and space calculation not necessary stuff for them?
