can I test the internal processing speed of my new 3G? It's pitiful! I run the same DianHua Chinese dictionary as a mate with a year-old 2G phone and his returns almost immediate answers, while you could make a cup of tea in the time it takes mine

How much free space on the phone? Are you jailbroken?

Once a jailbreak comes into the picture, there are too many variables involved to really tell you how to proceed to make it better. If you can try it stock (hassle, I know), it could be revealing to the actual problem.

He means restore it as a new device in iTunes so you can use it non-jailbroken to see if it performs better that way. Many people experience lag after JB'ing.

you also have to take into account the signal strength versus number of 3G users for that area's towers. It could be disproportionate and limiting bandwidth. That would also account for why your friends Edge signal is performing so well - not as many users on it.
You are on AT&T, right? Because if you are on T-Mobile (using a sim unlock), that is your problem right there. The 3G network that T-Mobile uses is not fully compatible with the iPhone.

thanks folks but:
my DianHua program was performing dismally even before I jailbroke it last Saturday
and we are in office block in Beijing, China - there are only 4 people with iPhones in the whole building as far as I know
and only 2 of us even bother using it as more than a phone!

It doesn't matter how many iPhones, it's how many 3G phones -as in any GSM phone with 3G capabilities -are on the network.

thanks but I think there's confusion:
my internet connect is fine
I don't think Beijing even has 3G yet
we both have jailbroken phones
but my friend's 2G processes this offline program way faster than mine -
and he's got heaps of things on his older 8gb phone
and my new 16gb has hardly anything on it!

If the program performed poorly on a freshly restored phone without a jailbreak, then I would return the phone and get another one.
