Is you Apple TV also logged in to the same iTunes account?

I get this on occasion. Wish I knew why -- seems almost as if it's not connecting to iTunes.

This is just a guess here... But... I know there are certain movies that can only be rented on the AppleTV and only viewed on the AppleTV. Sooo, maybe certain movies rented on mobile devices can only be viewed on mobile devices?

You're correct. It's an annoying move made by Apple. You should be able to rent all types of media, which should be playable on all devices associated to that iTunes account.
