I had a full charge today and unplugged my phone from the wall at 9:30 am. Its now 6:30 and i have used the phone for 5hrs and 10 hrs standby. My battery is going dead and the day isn't over yet. Is this normal or do I have a bad battery?

I went to the genius bar today and they told me that my battery is normal. I don't totally believe them. If so this is horrible battery life....

5 1/2 hrs of usage and my battery just went dead. Phone and internet only.
Browsing the web on wifi and/or edge can quickly drain the battery... try lowering your brightness and turn off wifi and/or bluetooth if you do not need it. I normally get 7-8 hours of usage checking email and browsing edge with my bluetooth on.

So my battery life is normal?

Also when typing on safari, there is a slight lag. Not really a problem but text messages are much faster.

It sounds normal to me if you have your brightness setting up higher and browsing with wifi. Is this about right for you? Also, safari is initially laggy, but once you get going, it is fine. Also check to see the time you have it pulling your email down... I have mine pulling it about every hour. Also be sure that your auto lock is set to 1 - 2 minutes, otherwise your screen stays on which drains your battery further. You may want to check the Apple store for a new portable ipod battery charger. It costs about $30, but it is small and should be able to extend your iPhone usage for a few more hours when you are traveling. I hope this helps you. The iPhone battery is much better than most pda cellphones that I have used before.

Thats normal also... Safari can be a bit of a cpu hog if the page is very complex, or if it is still loading/rendering the page. You iPhone sounds fine. Keep in mind the next closest device which can browse web pages gets about half that amount of battery life. I have a Sony UX micropc which has a super efficient CPU and it only gets about 2 hours of battery life. Like one of the earlier posts says, try making an adjustment to your brightness and turn off unneeded wireless features, if browsing on edge turn off wifi and bluetooth. Apple states 6 hours internet usage, so if you used it for 5 hours and you have 20% left, that seems almost exactly right.

I find myself syncing and adding stuff every once in a while throughout the day which usually keep my battery topped off.

Thank you all, I'm used to my blackberry's battery life which is at least 2 days of heavy use, but I also understand the touch screen takes more battery life than a blackberry, so I'll just have to get used to carrying around a charger wherever I go.

Brian, that is not normal... unless you were using wifi for the whole 5 hours... right now I have 4 hours 20 minutes usage and 2 days standby and I have 60% of my battery left... I used 3 hours phone and the rest on internet (EDGE) browsing and maps... no ipod use, i have no music in my phone...

I'm on my 4th iPhone, the 1st one and 3rd one had a battery similar to yours.. it would be almost dead after 4-5 hours use...the one I have now lasts 6-7 hours easily with 3 days standby... you should return it for a new one

Thats what I'm thinking. Why in the world would Apple make a phone that doesn't last an entire day? That defeats the purpose of a cell phone. The problem is, I took it to the Apple store I purchased it from and went to the genius bar today and they told me that it was normal but I just don't believe them..... what should I do at this point? I bought the phone on august 4th.

I also have the screen brightness at 20 percent and I always use the sleep button on top. Wifi was on for half the day today, the first half I disabled it. I don't really use the ipod. I refrained from using it at all. I texted today as well as talked on the phone and used safari.

Try changing your wifi setting. Go to wifi and turn off the Ask To Join Networks tab. Also, try going one day with wifi off the whole day and see how long your battery lasts. My battery lasts for a long time because I never use wifi. Try this out first.. you should get at least 6 hours usage with 2-3 days standby.

The battery seemed to be moving at the same rate when wifi was off for the first part of the day before i turned it on . I'm only getting a little more than 10 hours of standby and 5 hours of usage. I took my phone off of the charger this morning at 9:30am, it was dead by 5:30-6:00pm. wifi was on maybe 3 hours, didn't connect to anything.

So my standby time is only supposed to be 10 hrs? It doesn't even last an entire day which is potentially dangerous.

Stand-by time is the battery life you get if you are not using the device. The stand-by time of course decreases when you talk, surf, text or use the iPod. I charge every 2-3 days and I talk maybe 20 minutes a day, surf a little and listen to music or watch videos.

With only 5 hrs use, shouldn't my phone last at least as day? Yours lasts 2-3 days, mine lasts for 10 hrs.
