3G has terrible signal

I too have noticed low signal. But strangely, whenever I get a text I shoot up 1-2 bars. Very odd.
So I'm not the only one. Signal stregnth is way weaker than edge and also other 3G phones. I get 4-5 bars with most 3G phones here I am getting 1-3 bars of iPhone 3G.
That's weird. I'm in NYC and have good signal. I tried to locate me in the maps app and it located me pretty quickly and I know it was GPS because it actually moved as I was moving. Very impressed.
Where did you get yours? I got to my East Cobb location at 1:45 and was 12th in line. 45 minutes to activate and I was out and running by 8:45. lucky from all I hear.
No bars and no VM!
Additionally, my voicemail isn't working either. Loved the vm on my old iPhone. Beginning to wonder if it was a mistake to buy on the first day? Anyone else having issues w/ vm?
Same here. I have yet to see more than 1 bar in the DC area. GPS on maps took ages to load, but it finally worked. Much more specific on location than on old iPhone.

Northwest Chicago suburb here and have less 2 bars or less all day. We have to call and get tickets into AT&T so their tech team gets on this ASAP. When I shut off 3G I am getting full signal. I was told by AT&T that I have multiple towers around me that are 3G enabled and I should have the same signal with Edge as I do with 3G. I am hoping this is just cause of all the new phones going to these towers all at once, and that this issue will be resolved QUICKLY.
Just a thought-this happened to me with my 1st iPhone and I called AT&T. They resent signals to me a few times and then the reception greatly improved.
Also, some of you with v1 may remember the piece of scotch tape on the sim card thing, it sounds crazy but it actually worked,yes a small piece of scotch tape attached to sim card.

Im East of Columbus,OH and im getting 3 to 5 bars in different areas of my house while my v1 is at full.
3-5 bars varying over the past few hours here in Brandon FL (Eastern Tampa). Limited 3G signal (1 bar) but Edge is almost full strength. I'm going to do some more testing closer to downtown (Ybor, Channelside, S. Tampa) over the weekend.
Keep in mind that a "bar" is a relative measurement for each phone, not an absolute measurement. A 1 bar signal on one phone could be a 5 bar signal on another phone. I have no idea how the iPhone 3G compares to the iPhone in terms of absolute signal strength. But even on 1 bar 3G it seems to be getting a clear signal with good voice and data.
