If you go to the Apple site it only has the 8GB. If you search their site you'll find the marked down 4GB <-- 299.

I wonder if Jobs is kicking himself right now...

Wall Street was not that happy with Apple's announcement today.

Analysts said the price drop would definitely boost sales, possibly allowing Apple to achieve its self-proclaimed goal of selling 1 million iPhones by the end of September.

But they also questioned the move, which is not consistent with Apple's standard marketing practice of lowering prices during a product's second or third update. Apple also typically keeps the price the same but adds new features and storage when a product is upgraded.

Apple stock dropped more than 5 percent after the price drop was announced, losing $7.40 to close at $136.76.

"It will absolutely help sales -- but at what cost?" asked Tim Beyers, an analyst at The Motley Fool research and investment group. "People who bought the iPhone weeks or months ago must really be annoyed, and with good reason they might think twice about being the first to buy future Apple products. This smacks a little of desperation, and it's very unlike Apple."

True but that blackberry one didn't "go" it just came and stayed. I understand what you are talking about. I know I have got a DVD player from BestBuy (or was it CircuitCity) and they had a price guarantee and a couple weeks i got a check in the mail and was like "wtf is this for" I guess I got the DVD on the cusp of a price cut. I also know that I got a coupon for a discount on a TV and used it but a week later the TV was back at the normal price and no coupons were honored anymore. But this is the nature of the game and I understand people's frustration. Hell I wish i waited 2 months before I jumped on the bandwagon myself, but I didn't. But I'm not screaming for Apple/AT&Ts head and think they are EVIL for doing what they are doing. I don't think they "screwed" me and I'm not taking it personal like they intentionally were out for "F" the first buyers. Thats all I'm trying to get across is that its not EVIL and unheard of that stuff like this happens all the time. But before you know it people are gonna start screaming "class action!"
Like someone mentioned earlier, I'm fully aware of the consequences for early adoption of new technology. My usual method for determining the value of such practices is to take the dollar amount of the price drop and divide it by the time before it occurs. Now does anybody here love the iPhone enough to say they have gotten $200 of use from it or would have paid $100/month to rent one?

We could argue whether this right or wrong all day. All I can say from personal experience is that I've been an early adopter of technology for years (game consoles, hdtv's, new processors, cell phones, etc.) and this is the fastest and most drastic price consequence I've ever been a part of.

Of course we knew the price would drop...

Of course we knew the price would go down - I expected it in six months or so and was prepared for it. We're not total idiots, and most of us have actually bought consumer electronics before and don't need to be lectured to about the perils of early adoption. But I'm sure even all of you 'wise ones who waited' in your infinite wisdom did not expect it to go down this much this fast.

I kissed the $200 goodbye on June 29 - the worst part of this is turning out to be the gloating and pontificating from those who waited. Apple owes me something for putting up with that.

I have always bought Apple computers, and if you out there have never done so I urge you not to let this experience stop you. I'll go without a laptop before I'll buy anything but a MacBook. Try it and you will see why.

1.5 weeks is <14 days. Call Apple Customer Relations (assuming you bought it from Apple) and get them to refund you the difference.

I don't get it?

Either you mean your actually selling your rolex to 'get back' the aformentioned 200 dollars.

Or
You are a person that places their own self worth on how many gagets he has that OTHER people don't have.

IF it's the latter, then THIS just in:
Your 200 dollar watch has the same functionality as a $4.99 target watch. (loser attached to it not included.)

-C
I was being sarcastic, one of the awe's of the iPhone is that not everyone could get one now everybody is gonna have them and the awe is gone, its a great phone and I love mine, you will never find a rolex for 200 dollars they range from 3,000 to 100,000+ and they are the finest made watches in the world, if they were sold for 200 dollars they wouldn't be and most of that is the quality of the product and the people that buy and wear them know this.
by dropping the price of the iPhone to make them affordable just made the product one that was a must own piece of hot technology that movie stars were buying into a fly by night now everyone will have one item and its a shame.

I ordered my 4g refurb on the 22nd. I just called and they are sending me a brand new 8g + restocking fee. Not a bad deal.

My fiance and I were getting ready to go buy a laptop from the new Apple store opening tomorrow in Louisville at 6pm. No iMac for me now! Even if some feel the price drop is not a big deal, I don't want to walk in and throw down more money to Apple after getting this announcement today.

I have already had three people call me and laugh at me for paying $599 for the iPhone on 'opening' day and now they can get it for $399.

totally lame

this is pretty weak, but i couldnt have waited this long to get one. My wife got so sick of me talking about the iPhone she made me buy it(with very little resistance of course). However i was the first person to have one at my job that has over 500 employees in my location. When the second gen iPhone comes out i will be more patient. We should get some sort of credit for paying full price though!

Posted this in the other thread about price but want the point to get across to anyone reading this one too:

"The way I look at is that the more the better! Just think if there is a HUGE flux of iPhone users now demanding 3rd party apps, copy and paste, save of email attachments, iPhone accessories etc. Plus tack on the fact that now maybe some developers will make some stuff for the MASSES not just the select few who can afford the luxury of spending $600 on a toy"

I think people are missing some good things about the price drop as well. In the long run it will give us a larger voice! More iPhones kicking around isn't a bad thing at all. I'm done worrying about the price drop (wasn't a big deal to me) and moving on to other things. I think its GREAT for the iPhone community that we will now have more users overall at these prices!

Crap. The higher the rate of sales for these things the less the motivation for Apple to make it better. Instead of making a $600 phone worth $600 they just shrugged and discounted it to closer to its actual value. People can 'demand' all they want, lol, if Apple is still selling stuff, what do you think the effect will be? Please, get real.

If sales were flagging because of all the notoriety the problems had garnered, they could have turned them around by either fixing the problems, or lowering the price. Guess what?
