It wasn't the keynote that had me reconsidering the iPad. I keep reading those who were at the event talk up how insanely fast it is to browse the Internet. Instant-on, super fast Internet. By no means do I see the iPad for me as being a necessity, considering I have a number of very capable Macs -- for me it would be an expensive accessory to my computing lifestyle. I'm still on the fence, but man do I love me some fast, portable Internet.
But - ah, the multitasking is such a killer! You won't be able to check your e-mail while still on the web, or continue your chat conversation and check an incoming e-mail at the same time. This is the essense of being able to successfuly "bridge" the gap between the iPhone and laptop...

I just cannot fathom how they could leave this out. I would strongly urge people to wait for the second generation. You know they're going to fix the scroll of things wrong with this product...

As of yet for me the real problem is going to be the lack of Flash. That's just absurd. It does offer some cool UI functions that most e-readers these days do not but I'm not sure if that's enough to justify a purchase of it.

the only reason i am kind of considering it right now is for the internet. it would be a lot easier to travel with instead of my mac. i think ill wait until i can actually play with one to decide if i want it or not.

Just read a very good article aptly titled, "Who Really Needs an iPad".

To sum it up, it's not going to replace your existing gadgets, not a must-have, but it does fill a void.

Conceptually I love it. I have been thinking of getting a netbook and this would almost fill that need. The primary short comings are the lack of multitasking and the more iPhone like OS than the normal OS. I was hoping this would be closer to a laptop so other functional software could be adapted to the specifics of the pad, but I don't see that happening. I will wait to see what happens once it is jailbroken and advanced functionality is added. Right now it would be an expensive toy for me (one that my wife would use to hit me over the head for buying it)so I am on the fence, but falling towards the no.

Perhaps though if Apple had done everything people hoped for the iPad would have been double in cost? Then everyone would complain how costly it is. On a positive note I do really like the design and sleekness of the iPad. I won't be buying it however.

The more i think of it, the more i know i can use this iPad. I already decided to get one. When, I'm not sure.

1. Great for when I want to serf the net but not want to do it on my iPhone or use my iMac
2. Great for our Summer Black outs, provided it is juiced up as well as my iPhone, i will not be bored to death while waiting for the lights to come on. Last summer we had a two day one night black out and that was not fun (Kinda fun) and it was over the weekend!
3. Great for my guests so they have something to tinker with instead of taking over my or my husbands iPhone, or messin with my iMac, because I just won't have it.
4. Great for travel.
5. Great for travel with relatives and friends
6. Great for when i get to the destination, usually a relative who lives too far away, give them this to mess with for a spell instead of asking the stupid questions or wanting to mess with my iPhone. Or when i get bored i have something to do.

I know i can think of more. I know i won't be buying it right away, but maybe i'll get it before our next blackout. I can see me now going to the Apple store just to buy it because we're having a black out.

Yesterday I pretty much said I wouldn't be getting one. I think that response was too quick without much thought put into what this device CAN do. I also think it was out of disappointment for the lack of some features the iPad should have but doesn't. I am still on the fence. One of the big uses of this thing is books. I am a huge reader but really like having a physical book in my hands. But I must admit ever since the release of the Kindle I have been intrigued by the idea. So I am going to continue reading about the iPad on different sites as this has opened my eyes to what it does well and what it's intentions were and not try to make it what I wanted it to be. When the iPad is released, I will take a look and then make a decision. Being a gadget idiot I really do want to like this thing.
I think my biggest disappointment is the lack of flash, but that could easily change. Let's hope.

Oh, wow

I never realized anybody responded to my thread. I didn't get any notification by email, like I get for the other stuff! Now that I'm on MBA instead of iPhone, I see it all without glasses ;).
It's amazing what a little bit of real estate does! Time to read MY thread...

You know what i noticed though.

"Its its small, its not big enough. If its big, its not small enough"

People are gonna always find stuff to complain about.

Im a photographer and I find this product to be excellent for me. Its REALLY going to benefit me.

Another thing, its not about WHAT it does and HOW MUCH it does, its HOW it does it.

IT has the same functions as an iPhone but does everything better.
Better said than I could. Wonderful tool to edit my 30,000 iPhone pics and more to come...

iPad sucks. Bottom line.

You don't know that it sucks. You haven't used one!

I will probably still get one though.

I'm a photographer too. I currently use my MacBook when shooting an event. My current remote workflow is to download all pics from my camera to Aperture, process in Aperture, export to .JPGs then upload to smugmug.. I don't see how I can accomplish this with the closed iPhone OS on the iTab? I suppose we'll have to wait and see if the "camera adapter" will allow importing of photos to some application on the iTab, but I'm no sure this app will allow exporting to a file/directory and then uploading to the internet. I guess we'll see in 60 days, but my hopes aren't real high :(

Other than this "little" limitation, I'd still considering purchasing the $499 model just to have a "couch web browser" ;)
Just email your pics to yourself. I do that all the time.

I've been very critical of the iPad. A quick look at my office and it looks like a small Apple Store. I guess my negativity, if you'll call it that, is based upon my expectations of what I had envisioned. I wanted the iPad to be more Mac and less iPhone -- or better yet a nice mix of both. I like the idea of "instant Internet", which is what you'll get with the iPad. In many ways, the widgetized apps found on the iPhone are better than visiting a website. Why visit Fedex, when I have an app for that?

I don't read much, so I never bought a Kindle. Since I don't read that much, maybe the iPad will be sufficient for my needs. No eyestrain based upon my paltry reading habits. Last check, it took me 2 years to finish my last book.

So the iPad is a lean, mean Internet machine... it's not going to replace my MacBook Air, definitely not my Mac Pro and for sure not my iPhone 3GS. Is it worth $499 to fill that small gap between iPhone and MacBook Air. Yesterday, I would say no. Today, I'm considering it, but maybe only because I need one for my small Apple Store.

BTW, it's great to see you back here. I hope you'll enjoy your stay this time around and find yourself sticking around.
Haven't been here in a long time. I thought you had sent back your MBA because it didn't meet your needs... I left some time after that. What made you keep it (or get a new one?)?
I know what you mean by "a little Apple store". I even have a working Newton pad among its big siblings.

Thanks for the welcome.

Well, how about getting the first generation, then the 2nd generation when it comes out? My kid will be happy to get #1.

People were expecting the iPad to replace (possibly) their notebook. It's just a tablet, a very sweet one. It's an intermediary device, for someone who has no real use for a notebook. I had a macbook last year, but only used it to surf the web and check email on the couch, 10 feet away from my imac! I ended up selling it. So the ipad will be good for me. I like reading, viewing mobile media on a larger screen than my iPhone, and websurfing. People like me have no need to work on a notebook away from home. People like me don't even use computers at work. So the iPad ( still don't like the name) is perfect for people like me. It's not a necessity, just a toy to fill the gap between iPhone/touch and notebook.

I haven't posted here in a long time, because I've been hanging out more at MacRumors. But I got so sick and tired of the iPad bashing over there I thought I'd check out this board. Unfortunately the bashing seems to be happening here also. I just don't understand the phenomenon. To me the iPad is exactly what I was hoping it would be plus some. I had always thought that if I could get a portable device that does everything my iPhone does (except for the phone part) but in a larger form factor I'd be very happy. Apple did that plus some. I had no idea they would allow an external BT keyboard. I have an Apple wireless kb I don't even use. I love that you can get iWorks also for it. The price is fantastic. I was expecting a much higher price. The only thing I wish it did have is Flash. I do like to watch Hulu. But I'll live without it. I could care less about multi-tasking and camera. Basically the iPad will replace my Mac mini except for one funtion - I do use Quicken. Other than that I won't be touching my mini very much. I plan on getting the 32GB non-3G version on Day 1. Frankly I don't understand why people are complaining so much. They must have thought they were going to get a MBP in tablet form for $299.
