Synchronica sent me this email...

Synchronica’s Mobile Gateway product is SyncML gateway. Version 3.0, soon to be available, adds an IMAP/SMTP gateway so that both SyncML (PIM) and IMAP (email) are supported in the same product. We support SyncML on many handsets where it is built in, and through clients on Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices.

We are able to support mail only on the iPhone, as the iPhone has an IMAP client built in. Unfortunately, Apple has not chosen to use the industry standard SyncML protocol to sync calendar and contacts on the iPhone. Although we do have a desktop Mac OS X client that we could potentially leverage for the iPhone, Apple has been clear that they will not provide a mechanism for third parties to install applications (like a SyncML client) on the iPhone in the near future.

Since we can’t install a client, and, since Apple has not made public what they are using to sync calendar and contacts from desktop Macs and PCs over the USB cable, there is no option at the moment to support PIM data over the air. This applies to Apple as well as all third party developers.

So, at the moment version 3.0 of Mobile Gateway can do PIM data + email on 1) handsets with built-in SyncML and IMAP clients, 2) Palm OS Treos and 3) Windows Mobile devices. We can only do email on the iPhone due to the limitations Apple has placed on the device and what developers can do with it. Sorry that I don’t have a better answer.

Was hoping for someone who got into the first round of the demo to comment on install and functionality... not get yet another marketing blurb

Ive been using it, and it has been fantastic. The setup is VERY easy. I hope they do offer a individual user accounts. As I understand, at the moment, they do not. The trial last 60 days. You are giving your user name and password to a third party though...

I've been trying it since it came out, and it stinks. I just looked at my e-mail right before typing this, and it said it last synced 4 hours and 15 minutes ago. I have access to a computer to check my e-mail, and sure enough there are new messages that haven't gotten to my phone yet. I have my iPhone set to sync every 15 minutes, and waiting 4 hours+ is unacceptable.

I've also had it happen where messages I sent will send themselves 6 and 7 times. I hit sent once, but when I check my Sent Items folder from a computer, I can see that the messages were sent a bunch of times. Must be very annoying for the people on the other end.

They have a lot of work to do before this service is going to be a viable option. It's far too unreliable, and the connection to their server far too unpredictable for me right now.

The servers have been upgraded to a scalable UNIX system and should provide good service form now on. We had experienced a large number of users signing up for the trial (as someone else put it in this forum: Thats what you get if you are first and use the word free trial). Anyway, we have positive feedbasck from many users of the trial. It may not work for everyone, but it does seem to work fine for many.

Is no one concerned about supplying the password to their corporate account to a company on the web?! I have NEVER typed my password to the work account into anything but the company servers. I think this is a serious issue.

Unfortunately, this is a deal breaker for me. I won't use this service unless the password is not stored on the Synchnonica servers but instead only passed through from my iPhone to the company servers WITHOUT it being stored on those servers.

Another alternative is for this to be sanctioned by my company (i.e., not simply set up by me as a user).

What about getting to actually work consistantly?

I did get into the Demo the other day and have it all setup, but my phone only tells/shows that i have email when i actually go into the Email account and sub-folder

I've got the phone set to check every 15 mins, and i know this works all right because it does beep at me when an email to my Gmail account comes in, but for my work email, and even at the base "Inbox" folder, i get nothing until i actually open the folder up....

I think you have a lot of scalability to add, server resonse times have been quite bad.
