I plan not to show off my iPhone to family at a 4th of July gathering tomorrow because I will get criticism for it costing too much, being an unnecessary luxury/display of consumerism, etc., etc.

My friends are another story and are generally interested though some are getting sick of hearing about the iPhone. :)

I quickly learned to hide it when in public. I learned that sitting on the bench in my local mall while browsing the web was a bad thing. I had multiple people come up and say "Is that an iPhone?" Me - "Yes it is" Them - "Wow, thats so cool, can I see?" and then they sit down before I have a chance to answer.

my friends have given me enough shi* about the cost and all the details and bugs and stuff and ive had enough
they act like they know everything about it when really if they did they would appreciate the device
i will have to keep my pleasure to myself in this case

The day I got it I went out to the bar as I usually do on a Friday. I was all about showing it to everyone who asked, especially after a few beers in me. Now I try not to draw attention as I'm sick of explaining it to people and fear of them wanting to hold it and then dropping it. If my friends are over at the house I don't mind them using it, I've dropped it on my carpet a few times on purpose just to see.

Oh and I'm the same way about most of my fam... they will complain and judge me because I spent that much money on a phone because thats all they see it as. I personally am getting my $600 out of the thing. I use it for music in the car or on my bike and when I'm waiting in a line I'm reading digg or watching a youtube video. It's so awesome!

Personally, I think it is a better deal to go out and buy an iPhone than another iPod and a blackberry.

Surprisingly, my entire family including my grandparents were pretty impressed by it and thought it was worth the money.

The only family member that had a gripe with me getting was my dad but that quickly went away.

Dad: Where've you been all day?
Me: Trying to get an iPhone
Dad: Gosh, you know you could've just waited. I mean it's so expensive and if anything it's just a waste of money with all those unnecessary---
Me: *puts one on his desk*
Dad:....
Me: I got one for you too. Late Father's Day Gift.

He's had nothing but nice things to say since then.

But as for friends, yes I get the occasional, "I just think it's so unnecessary." or "waste of money" or "it has a lot of problems."

I give the same semi-jerk-off response each time to convey my annoyance.

"Then don't get one and shut the hell up."

That is a epic story.

But on topic I try not to have it out in public but when I get a call or text message there is always someone there for some reason then they want to see it.

If you're a grown man or woman and earn your own money, yet someone criticizes how you spend it without paying your bills for you...they need to be smacked.

I got a person that saw it on me and told me that it was stupid and is and that they would never spend the money on one. He no sooner said that then couldn't stop nagging me to see it and to let him touch it, of course I didn't let him.

I am quickly getting to the point of just politely asking them some questions... Have I criticized their matchbook collection? their BMW? their new navigation system? the round the world trip they took last year? The new living room set they bought?

Then what makes you think I want to hear about my buying an over priced phone that I wanted? Anybody? Buehler?

I haven't put mine away yet as I generally keep it clipped on my belt, but I am starting to rethink this as well. I don't splurge on something like this often, but to hear people talk I am some free wheeling spend-a-holic. :(

I totally agree people just need to get over their jealousy.

My wife and I are very well off with our combined incomes, but most of my colleagues wives don't work. Even though this thing was expensive in their opinions, my wife and I can completly afford it. Fortunately I've gotten good at ignoring any negativity towards my iPhone. Im confident that i made a good purchase and absolutely love this thing :)

I use it as I normally would in public. The first day or so I showed it to all of my friends but when I'm out somewhere I use it as I normally would. Honesly, I really haven't even used it that much. I've probably used the ipod function the most.

I haven't been exactly flashing it around and saying "I have a $500 phone". I listen to music a lot and the headphones look very much like ipod headphones, so everyone just thinks I am listening to an ipod. It's usually in my pocket. I just got one of those armband cases for trips to the gym.

I work at a meijer, which is a union shop walmart basically, and I was showing my dad a video and another employee was like "everyone has an ipod". My dad said "His ipod makes phonecalls.".
