I just picked one up and found a great deal of static in the background that is most obvious when there is no talking but diminished somewhat when conversation is taking place. I can't have the phone more than a few feet away without losing connection and even with it only inches from the headset there is still static. Is this similar to other people's experience?

This is kind of bizarre. If you read the reviews on the Apple website, they are about evenly mixed: About the same number of people are experiencing noise as are the number of people who claim that it is crystal clear.

I went back to the Apple store today testing the Apple bluetooth as I drove. There was less static than yesterday but even with the iPhone at my side and less then two feet away, voices dropped out and were garbled. It was my luck that they just got in a bunch of new headsets so I exchanged mine for a new one. It seems to have a lot less static and greater range than the first. Voices are clearer and solid. There seems to be a great variation in headset samples or how they connect with individual iPhones. I find the incoming sound quality much better then my Jawbone with the outgoing sound very good if there is not much background noise. Each headset has its advantages, but the Apple is for me the most comfortable.
Hmm.. Me and a buddy purchased the Apple BT same time same day and experienced the same thing. Static, poor sound etc. The easy pair and extra accessories are cool but not worth the price IMHO. Fit also leaves a lot to be desired. They should've taken more ear sizes into account.
