Since the iPhone is not subsidized and from my understanding you are eligible for an upgrade no matter when you signed a previous contract is it possible for me to signup for new service prior to the 29th and get a 2 year discount price on another model phone that is subsidized and then buy the iPhone at full price signing a new 2 year contract ?

Legally I don't think they can extend beyond 2 years from what I have been told, in theory shouldn't it just restart a new 2 year contract on Friday? My thoughts are since they won't subsidize the iPhone why can't I get a subsidized phone prior to the iPhone. My thoughts are if for some reason they won't do it I can always return the other phone within 30 days.

att_employee posted this in another thread:

A customer can perform an upgrade tomorrow to another device and extend his or her contract, and STILL be eligible to purchase the iPhone and re-extend their contract on Friday.

Check out the At&t FAQ here:

At&t iPhone FAQ

Look for this part about buying iPhone after recently upgrading:

Q. I just upgraded my phone recently. Are there any penalties or restrictions for upgrading to iPhone right away?
A.
No. Everyone can upgrade to iPhone right away.

My contracts always went back to a 2 year contract when upgrading, they have never added on top of what was left (upgraded after a year, have also upgraded after 30days)

Anybody have a Contract longer than 2 years.

If this is true then I may as well go signup and get a free phone that I can resell which will be money towards the iPhone on friday.

I would check with At&t Customer Care first. This may be true, but it doesn't seem to be worded that way in the iPhone FAQ.

It seems to me that from how it's worded in there you could just buy a phone at promotional pricing, then get the iPhone and your contract would just be the original 2 years.

There's really no drawback to trying this, if you check the online account thing and it says you have a 4 year contract, you can take your freebie phone back and have them cancel the extra 2 years.

One thing I just wanted to add. You are not getting a discount if you pay 599 or 499 it is Full Price. So locking you in for 2 years is what will pay them back for the free phone you got before the iPhone (remember they also making 20 more a month).

But that is what the AT&T corp spokesperson said. He specifically said the 2yrs resets to when you activate the iPhone.
