i called AT&T (1-877-419-4500) a few minutes ago and i went directly to a representative. She was actually pretty nice and helpful. The wait is now said to be 24-48 hours and Atlanta and New York are the worst areas. She said New York is worse, so sucks fuckers cause I live in Savannah. Basically there's just a bunch of numbers in their servers that are awaiting activation and its just going through them slowly and its a matter of time before they get to yours. She said the email will tell you to plug in your phone again but she recommended keeping it plugged in because it could just activate automatically. My account had the new SIM card updated and all that so I guess I'm just waiting my turn to activate. I wish the people who have activated recently would say what time they went through the activation process on iTunes. If someone did theirs at 9pm and just got theirs, then maybe I would know mine is up in an hour since I did mine at 10pm.

Right after I posted that I checked my email and got this message at 2:48:

We are currently processing your order. Your order number is ******
You will receive an additional e-mail when your order is complete that will provide further instructions to activate your iPhone.

Anyone know if I can do anything useful with this number or if theirs any significance to this email? I'm guessing it means progress though so thats cool

This just in......

My old phone (RAZR, Cingular) now indicates an 'unregistered SIM'. Therefore, it is no longer useable.

iPhone coming up on 16 hours....still not activated.

I'm off to work in an hour (and really DO need a cell phone) and suspect I'll be heading out with nothing in my pocket save a receipt for the $600 or $700 (iPhone case and some iPod-related items) I spent yesterday evening.

It's gonna be cool. It's gonna be cool. It's gonna be cool. It's gonna be.... ooohhh nevermind.

....sT
Take the sim card out of the iPhone and put it into your old cell phone, it should work.

I am going into hour 20... I called Sprint the other day and they said my billing cycle ended on the 30th. If they don't port my number by tonight and I get another bill from Sprint then I am going to be super pissed! I'm afraid to call Sprint about it.

on the phone with Apple. they are completely baffled that my SIM is working when i put in the blackberry. we are calling AT&T together to talk to them together and if AT&T agrees that my SIM is active and that something is weird, I'm going to troubleshoot through Apple. I will keep everyone posted. I explained that I am tired of waiting and want them to work to fix this and pretty much demanded to at least have an idea of what's going on.

Apple was a little bit shock when i said, "my SIM is working, AT&T has transfered everything, my account is updated. I'm waiting on the iPhone to work, not AT&T."

Hi Mandy,

Everyone is having the same problem. Most peoples old phones work using the iPhone sim but the iPhone still is not activated. I am having the same issues as well.

Thanks for your updates, Mandy. Is there any way to check if SIM card is active other than putting it in another phone? Not sure my old Nokia has a removeable replaceable one.

I went by the ATT store where I purchased it this afternoon. They also like so many on the phone feign surprise to hear there are problems out here. They had some numbers to call and got me on the phone with another ATT activation lady who got a bit snippy and defensive when I was complaining as she continued this BS about being so surprised at the magnitude of the activations. She also was the first one to blame Apple directly altho she went on to say it was a combination process. First in the activation Apple has tot do something and then they notify ATT that it has been done and phone is ready for number to be ported or added or whatever. the woman said Apple has been slow to notify ATT when its time for them to do their thing which is why, she claimed, that my old Alltel number is still active,

Bottom line I'd heard before ---- you must be patient and wait -- there's nothing else we can do unless you want to cancel this activation and start over which she admitted may not be any better.

I can just see a nightmare scenario of having to start over anyway after we reach the magic 24 hr mark. I see above one person of the waiting group has gotten service. Anyone else hearing from them yet. Not quite sure why all of a sudden magically after 24 hours there will be a sudden ton of activations but hopefully so.

I realize that everyone else is having this issue, but not many people are calling and stressing that issue so this is the first that customer service reps have heard of it. Just seeing if there's some special trouble-shooting that we need to do through Apple.

I think everyone loves and wants to love Apple so much that they are blaming AT&T. In our cases, my point is that it seems that AT&T has done their part. It could be anybody, but I am demanding to know who and what I can do. I'm tired of "just waiting". I'm f*cking fed up.

no problem, i'll keep everyone updated to the end. i know i should be patient and that's what everyone keeps saying, but i feel that waiting hours in the sun was patience, and then hours upon hours of this is just crap.

i read on another forum that people have just been going and getting new sim cards and restarting and it's gone straight through.

if Apple product support doesn't work, and then it isn't working at 7pm (the 24 hour mark), then i'm going to go get a new sim card. i'm going to bring my laptop in there and say "make it work". I have a friend that works where i bought it so i know that i have someone competent that genuinely wants to help me.

I just got off the phone with AT&T and the CS Rep i talked to said that everything is right on their end. She even verified my SIM id on the new iPhone. She said they just sent out a new email stating that iTunes will send you out an email when you can activate your phone and you will have to go back through the process again? I hope this is not correct.

I am also scared that the four or fives times I have cycled the power on my phone was one of the times they were trying to activate my sim card...... who knows.

I bet Steve Jobs iPhone is working.

in the AT&T store as we speak to get a new SIM, I'll keep you up to date.

By the way, was on hold for Apple Product Support for over 2 hours before finally hanging up and coming here.

OK, I did the new SIM card deal, went back, got a new one, went through Activate again this time just choosing to take a new number and not bother porting over old one at this time. Entered address as it was on credit app which is different from billing address (figured maybe that contributed).

Result: I am the bummed out possessor of another email tellingg me it will take more time to activate and will receive further email when it is activated, just like 23 hours ago.

Has anyone ahd a quick repsonse after getting the dreaded email response?

I am so totally fed up.

Great Mandy, pleased for you. Did you do anything else differently? Did ya'll have a credit code to enter in that block? i asked about that at second trip and they said they knew nothing about a credit code if you were pre approved.

Just grasping at straws as to what I could ahve done wrong.

at the store I was in, they weren't preapproving credit because they wanted everyone out the door so I didn't get any type of code. I do know that if they did preapprove your credit, EVERYTHING must be entered just as they entered when you go in to activate. The only things I had to enter through my activation were phone number, zip code, last four of social, mac username and password, and do i want more text messaging. After that, i didn't enter in anything except for agreeing to legal crap and hitting continue.

i went and got a new sim, same thing, your activation requires additional time to complete.
