Your best bet will be to probably renew and order online. When I worked with Cingular, you had to activate the phone in the area you lived. That was the only way they could assign the correct zip code to the new number. Of course most people port their old numbers today.

Welcome cc!

You can upgrade your plan anywhere. Any AT&T store should be able to pull up and modify your account.

As ColsTiger said, if you also buy an iPhone, AT&T may insist you activate the phone where you use it most. Be aware that there are often penalties for excessive roaming, which you'd risk if you when to another state to buy your iPhone. You may be able to use a proof of address, like your driver's license, to convince them to work with you. Than the only question becomes: how much of your vacation do you want to spend waiting on line? :p

I believe Att/Cingular is nationwide coverage with no roaming or long distance so you can be away from your "home area" with zero penalties.

You need to read your fine print then. If you spend too much time out of your home area and roam more than you don't, then they can close your account.

You're right about free roaming. They don't charge you for roaming, but if you roam too much, then they'll just drop you.

Apple and Cingular/ AT&T will definitely start selling them online on or before the 29th of June, the release date. Whether or not they will do online preorders hasn't been officially announced.

eBay is usually trustworthy, but it is your choice whether you buy it there or not.

I'v been waiting a long time as well, but with every day that passes by and new info about all the rings you have to jump throught with Att to get this thing if your a existing customer, I am getting less thrilled with it.

I agree completely. I can't wait for it to come out, but at the same time i am dreading it. I have this bad feeling I'll be all excited about getting it, but i'll spend 3 hours trying to get the thing activated or something.

Im not sure about that. My boyfriend lives in Ohio and we are from Puerto Rico, so his number and voice plan are from Puerto Rico. He has been in Ohio for one year now and his phone works just fine, and the bill its normal, no extra charges or anything....

Why? I haven't seen anything concrete yet, though ATTingular's info is very much appreciated. I can't see how Apple would allow this to be a bad/difficult situation. I'm hoping what I've read is true and switching from Verizon will also be made easy by Apple. The only killer I can see is if that required data plan is costly.

I've been waiting for this device since the iPhone was rumored over 2 years ago. Then during the Moto keynote they released their version of the iPhone. I was quite underwhelmed. I've been looking forward to this day ever since.

I agree, the only killer could be the data plan. I don't think it is going to be too expensive. We will just have to wait to know for sure.

I don't see why people are getting upset over the 2 year contract (extension for existing customers) since we knew that was a requirement since the iPhone was announced in January. It is no different than if you upgrade to any other phone AT&T sells (unless you pay full price for it).

All of this concern regarding whether or not current AT&T customers are eligible for an upgrade could prove to be unwarranted. I think we need to remember that most of the info out there now is unconfirmed/rumor. Lets just wait for the official announcement before we get too worked up ;).

Yep, it's crazy to worry about before the official details are released by At&t and Apple. They'll be out soon enough.
