Black or White ? What did you get and why.

With use. Wear and tear. The eventual look of the phone after repeated use. After dropping it. After the white starts to discolor.
What makes you think the phone will discolor? I have a 2 year old white macbook that is as white as it was the day I bought it. I would think that the black would show more wear and tear then white. Black has a tendency to show dents and scratches a bit more then white does. Ever look at a black car with scratches on it? Shows each little nick and scratch. The black could fade just as easily as the white.

No one has even seen the wrist pads on the white MacBooks? No? They're probably the most trafficked parts of the MacBook and are constantly touched. Unless you're not planning on using the iPhone on a semi-regular basis then the odds are that you're going to be touching it a lot. This will eventually lead to discoloration. Secondly, if you scratch something black and dirt fills in the void, it will look dark. If you scratch something white and dirt fills in the void, it will look dark.

Umm, I have a white macbook and my wrist pads are the same they were the day I bought them. There was a problem about 3 1/2 years ago with discoloration. Not anymore. Apple fixed that issue. Macbooks DO NOT discolor. So Apple figured out how to stop the discoloration process. And if what you are saying is true, when you get a scratch you will go outside into a garden and grab some dirt and rub it on your phone? I will not be doing that, I will just enjoy the scratch barely visible if at all on my white backing and not worry about dirt filling in the void...

Yes obviously I'm working with an intellectual superior here. I have several friends that own white MacBooks and all of wrist pads have started to discolor with age. Each of the laptops is under 1 year old (read:also less than 3.5 years) so apparently Apple didn't fix the issue like you stated.

And yes, I'm going to go into a garden and rub dirt into the scratch on my iPhone. That would be a possibility and so could the fact that dirt and dust and grime and filth is going to invariably work it's way into and onto the phone. Do you honestly think you're going to keep it in an entirely clean environment all the time? If you do, that goes back to the intellectual superior thing again and I will leave it at that.

The material from the wrist pads is different than on the iPhone.

The top of my Macbook has some decent scratches and hasn't "filled" with any dirt or grime. Just as white as the day I bought it. I have full faith the iPhone will be the same way.

don't we all? or most of us will get rubber or plastic protector to cover them anyway.....?

so maybe wear and tear can't be too big of concern.... in my opinion..
if they do, i'm sure black get tear and wear as much as white would do..

OK, again I have had a macbook for 2 years and my macbook is not discolored. I am sorry for your friends, tell to wash their hands before using their computers....I don't know. As far as keeping phones clean, you never saw what my v1 iPhone looked like. Not a scratch or a dent on it, and very few scratches on the bezel. The way the white iPhone is made, you will not be able to see scratches. You will be able to see cracks if you get them but not scratches.

Hey Phil - I'm not sure I agree with you. But on the possibility of it happening, I put an invisible shield on the phone (front and back). THAT should prevent discoloration.

Though, I tend to think that the back of the 3G is similar to the outer casing of the MacBooks, which hides scratches pretty well - and doesn't discolor.

Either way, won't we all ditch the current phone when the new phone comes out, and won't that happen before this one will discolor? :)

So Cal
White just looked different, the black looks more like a guys phone. I ordered Invisible Shield so maybe won't have to worry too much about smudge/scratches. I think the color though is just a matter or preference.
But the white does not look like the type of plastic that will discolor.
To each his own I guess.

Actualy the iPhones back is made of the same exact plastic the Apple mighty mouse that ships with all mac desktops and they do not discolor. So the iPhone 3g should not discolor. yay:laugh2: (correct me if im wrong)

If I had a choice I would get a white one, just because it's different as almost all mobile phones are black. But unfortunately for me, white iPhones are not gonna be available in the UK till December and I just don't think I can wait that long. So I will probably end up getting a black one as there's no way I can wait 5 months. Does anyone think I should wait? Is there anyone else from the UK on this forum? What are you doing?
