Calendar events gone?

hopefully with all these iPhone 5 questions, someone can help me. ok, my mom doesn't back up her phone often, and today she came to me and said all her calendar events from the last year till this week are gone. my first though was that she somehow deselected her calendars in the settings, but its selected and everything is gone. what would make this happen. and theres nothing to get them back short of restoring ?

Make sure in settings>calendars that it is set to sync far enough back. For instance, the shortest setting is "sync events two weeks back." With this selected, all events older than two weeks don't show up in your calendar. I have mine set to "sync all events." I personally like to be able to look as far back as I want to see my past schedule.
