Camera resolution?

The camera on the iPhone is advertised as 2 megapixels, but I see no way to change the resolution, and all photos show up as 640x480. The online manual also has no information as to how to change anything. The camera is the first thing on the iPhone I'm pretty disappointed in.

Any ideas?

I'm afraid there is no way to change the resolution to my knowledge. But I totally agree, there is no "features" to the camera. There is LITERALLY only a capture button. The camera is not a problem for me, but I know they could of done so much better after seeing what they did with photo booth on the mac.

I am so confused. How can it be a 2 megapixel camera but the photos it takes are only ever 640x480?

I think you're on a PC and something's altering the pic as it comes off the phone.

The 640 X 480 is probably caused by the program your using to download them off your phone and not the phone itself. I use a PC and pull my pictures directly off the camera when it shows up in "My Computer" and the images I take with the camera are 1200 X 1600

I took this one, just pulled it from my camera and rotated it upright.

It will only transfer at 640x480 if you send it in an email from your phone. If you pull it from a PC you get the higher resolution.

iPhone picture resolution

The iPhone takes a 2 meg picture. If you email a picture from the phone, the resolution is downsized to 640x480. However, connect the phone to the computer and download to get the original full 2 meg resolution.

So when it's imported into iPhoto, does it downsize it?

edit: Nevermind, I just checked it & it does import at full res.

FYI SOME applications show my iPhone pictures at 800x600 resolution. This might be an app problem. Download irfanview (http://irfanview.com/ not an Apple product) the software gives you detail of the image (just press "i" when the picture is loaded). This software shows all the iPhone images are 1200x1600 (or 1.9 Mpix)

I'm pretty satisfied with the iPhone camera. Considering all the other cell phones I've owned (some that even claimed better MegaPixels) it seems to be the best.

Its been said before but 5 years down the line we are going to have one device to carry around that does camcorder/camera/phone/pda/etc.. all pretty damn good. Obviously we don't expect professional level but I think it will be pretty good.
