Can I sell iPhone, what about phone number?

I love the iPhone but it just doesn't do everything I need in a work envoirnment. Can I sell the phone, but can the person use his phone number, as I want to cancel my plan?
If so, do we need to call ATT or go to an Apple store?

If you want to sell, just sell it without the sim card. They can take it to an AT&T store to get a new one and get their number ported over.

Well call up att and see if the can deactivate it for you so your friend dosn't need to pay for a new sim.

No need to return it, all I need is a new sim card, then I sell it to my friend.
It looks like I am starting to get the corporate run around. I called ATT and they said no problem to cancel my new account, but to get a new sim card, I must go to the Apple store.
I called the Apple store and they said for a new sim card, I need to go to a ATT store. I did not think the ATT stores had the iPhone sim cards.
This could be more difficult fight than I imagined to get a phone numer on a iPhone changed!
