can iPod chargers be used to charge iPhone

hey guys I'm in the car right now on my way to vacation in Wisconsin but bad news... I forgot my charger! Even though the battery could defanately last the 3 days gonna be there I will probably be browsing and listening to music a lot so I might need to charge but heres the question .. Since my mom brought her iPod charger couldnt I use that?

That's how I charge mine at work. Rather than buying another lame piece of proprietary cable from fApple, I just keep my iPod cable at work.

Funny story related to this topic.... my first iPhone would go in to recovery mode since the day I got it and be useless for a few hours. So I call support and they walk me through a bunch of steps including restoring the iPhone (which wouldn't work by the way) and the tech on the line asked if I was using the
iPhone cable or an iPod cable. When I told him the iPhone cable he said 'good because we have had reports of problems with syncing when using an Ipod cable'. He said charging works fine but syncing/restoring can be problematic.

To me this sounds like a croq but has anyone else been told this?

Interesting. I just restored my phone and synched it right now. I'm on my MacBook Pro but I'm using my girlfriends iPod cable at her house. Everything worked perfectly.

Funny I tried using my friends Video iPod cable to charge my phone the other day and a screen popped up saying that the charger was not an approved iPhone accessory and may damage the phone.

Anyone else get this

Nothing like that but I did plug my iPhone into an iPod charger at work to see if it would work and it made the little noise and the battery level popped up so I figured it was ok and I left it for 20 minutes and came back to see that not only did it not charge it but it drained 1/4 of the battery. I decided to leave it go some more and after a couple hours I checked again and it was fully charged. I'm not sure which iPod charger I used but I did notice it was a firewire plug. I'm guessing that it was pretty old?

last night i connected my iPhone to my laptop with an old ipod cable, and it charged and was recognized by iTunes, but iBrickr never recognized it. I didn't give it much thought because i was too tired to deal with it. I'll try it again today with both cables and see what happens.

i was thinking the same thing, but if you look at the specs on the ipod charger versus the specs on the one that came with the iPhone, the voltage that comes out of it are different, even though it will charge the phone, you may risk damaging the phones battery in the long run.

I just played it safe and only use the iPhone one or charge through the computer.

Someone with more EE background could chime in and say if the difference in v's makes a big difference. I've always learned that its a no no if the voltages are different.

What are the specs on each?


I have a cheapo no-name universal FM transmitter/charger in my car. It works fine. It asks me if I want airplane mode when I plug it in, but it doesn't force me into airplane mode.

I also just ordered this extender/AC charged from Amazon, it should come in very handy for watching multiple movies on those long travel days...

Results: It has been charging fine, but WILL NOT SYNC.

I sync with iTunes on my desktop computer at home using a random iPod cable that is always plugged in there. I sync with Outlook on my laptop at work, also with an ipod cable. well, like i said, i have been using an old ipod cable all this week, and it (the phone) has not been recognized in iTunes at all (and i plug it in every night to charge). I'll get my iPhone cable back today (long story), so i'll post an update when i try the iPhone cable again.

i get this when i try to use the car charger i got with my iTrip for my iPod.
i really wish it would work because i need to charge it in the car often..

For whatever it's worth, my 2G Nano charger says 5V, 1A. I have been using the Nano cable with the iPhone charger for charging at night (works most of the time) and the iPhone cable to sync with my laptop.

My nano chargers work just fine and have the 5 volt specs also.

I have been using the charger that came with my 30GB iPod Photo since july 6 to charge my iPhone and haven't had any problems. I also use the same charger to charge my 160GB Classic. No problems there either!

this is my point exactly, the amperages and volt ratings are different, even though it may seem to work fine but you could be doing damage to your battery. if someone with more knowledge could chime in.

i'm only cautious of this because i charged one of my old laptops with an oem charger that came with another model and ended up hosing the battery.

Someone over on the Apple.com/iPhone discussion boards posted a warning of 10v vs 5v with the chargers. Possibly causing damage. Don't kill the messenger. Just passing along info.
