i have an ipod photo as well as the iPhone. the ipod cable was firewire, and i can tell you that the phone won't sync to the computer via that cable. however, i have a generic ipod/iPhone charger in my car that does work with both as it was advertised to do.

hey guys I'm in the car right now on my way to vacation in Wisconsin but bad news... I forgot my charger! Even though the battery could defanately last the 3 days gonna be there I will probably be browsing and listening to music a lot so I might need to charge but heres the question .. Since my mom brought her iPod charger couldnt I use that?

This is too late to help you however, I can say from experience the 2G Nano charger (5 volts, same as the iPhone) works fine with either cable.

Apple Just Told Me Not To

Just got off the phone with Apple and I'm about to have my iPhone replaced -- for the second time. Someone had mentioned I shouldn't charge my iPhone on my iPod car charger (Belkin), because although it seems to work, I might be damaging my battery.

Sure enough, when I asked the support rep if that was true, he said yes. After two iPhones that both had battery problems (wouldn't hold a charge for 24 hours of standby time), I'm not taking any chances.

Interesting. I just restored my phone and synched it right now. I'm on my MacBook Pro but I'm using my girlfriends iPod cable at her house. Everything worked perfectly.
Same here. Since neither cable is marked "iPod" or "iPhone" I have no idea which one is which anymore and I've never had a problem.
