I used to have a Blackberry and it had the capability of being used as a modem. I was able to connect my lap-top to my device via a usb cable. Can this be done with the iPhone?

It can be done, but requires hacking.

The great thing is that you connect via WiFi--no wires. Essentially the iPhone uses its EDGE connection for Internet and WiFi (Ad Hoc) to connect to a laptop (proxy).

This thread is about how to do it on a Mac (there are others around that deal with Windows).
