I'm not quite sure what you're asking. If you go to ATT, your limited to only one phone, but if you go to an Apple store, you can buy two. You activate the phone and your account at home on your computer using iTunes.

So at the Apple store you can buy 2, and bring it home, without signing a contract in the store? Right?

If I'm not mistaken, all you will be doing in the store is buying the phone/phones. When you go through the activation process through iTunes, thats when you electronically sign a 2 year contract, since it is required. There is no way to get an iPhone and NOT be in a 2 year. I am pretty sure there is no way around it.
