I would guess you saw widgets. Open your dashboard on your Mac and you'll see widgets. You can download many more from Apple or 3rd party websites.

You may have seen desktops that were customized with GeekTool and Geeklets. It's considered complex and not for beginners so you'll want to research it first and make sure you know what you're getting into before installing it.

Thank you I will look into that. I've done a lot of customizing with my iOS devices just haven't done anything to my MacBook. I think I can handle it

Must not be Lion-friendly. I couldn't get it to work at all after following the instruction on using the geeklets with geek tool.

Considering how crappy and slow that stuff is on Windows Vista/7 I don't want it anywhere near the desktop on my macs. :)

I'm happy with my menu bar weather Applet, plus a few other menu bar add-ons, and dashboard for other stuff.
