I am an old palm user, and an old Apple user. I have used database software on both platforms. With Appleworks on the Apple II and the Mac. HanDbase on the Palm. I would really like to do database applications on the iPhone. Has anyone heard how to do that. Has anyone heard if Appleworks will be ported to the iPhone. That would be great.

I am wondering this too. Apple says you can view Excel and Word email attachments. Will we be able to compose in Excel and Word? That would make this phone complete for me - I'd want to have access to work folders. I have a feeling this will not be the case...

I'm also really hoping for DB creation & editing capability. So far, not possible. I'm getting rid of my Treo, so I picked up a cheap Zire ($35, eBay) for critical DBs until there's something available for iPhone.

yeh filemaker would be an interesting solution. I haven't used it myself... does it have a web interface where you can edit records?

You can either use Instant Web Publishing, which mimics the GUI of the database you build in FileMaker -- it works pretty well, there are a few drawbacks to it, but it is, well, instant. There is also custom web publishing, and you can use PHP or XML/XLST. If you want to roll your own, i.e., PHP and MySQL, that certainly will work. Just design for the screen size.

you can use zoho on the computer and mini.zoho.com which is optimized for the iPhone.

I run Filemaker 2.0 on my HTC Tilt (even use to on my SX66. I use it for all of my client project files, photofiles and project management. Lets see Filemaker's Apple's own product and yet it does not run native on the most powerful PDA device on the market.
I'm still so blown away that the iPhone is getting all these raves when it's really an over glorified phone/mp3 player. I had one for two weeks (iPhone ver. 1.0) I love its OS though some hurdles I'd like to see solved:
- sorting of contact by company names (sorry I don't remember everyone's name with vendors and companies I deal with. Like to sort by company, last name please.
- finally 2.0 solves the multiple deletion of emails. one good fix.
- a fully programmable relational database. can you say FILEMAKER
- integration of the contact, calendar, todo/task list. Take a look at Adgendus (www.iambic.com). a sweet shell that runs over the OS of WinMobile
- applications that can run native, NOT web based. I really don't want my phone bill higher than it is. Oh yeah... they made a deal with AT&T... hummm sounds like something done on the 'cross-roads'.
- Flash? Uh, does anyone know...does iPh 2.0 support Flash finally?
- SD memory micro! Sure would be nice to have a chip to add memory or maybe files I want to make portable (not have to sync with the memory hog iTunes.
- how about a very small, low memory profile sync-ing app. Something that can tie into things you want to sync. Like apps and data.
- Works. Would be so awesome to be able to work on an Excel sheet or Word doc. from the iPhone. That big screen, the zoom-ability. It's so perfect and a QERTY keyboard.
-replaceable battery so, when my phone is low I can swap out the battery for a fully charged one and recharge the first.
The iPhone has the most powerful processor in any PDA in the world, the biggest memory HD of any device, the cleanest and fastest OS. Why can't it do something real for me, a computer user that also would like to have a really portable computer....which the iPhone so easily can be and be native.

Give it time, my friend. The personal user was Apple's initial target demographic, not the businesss user. With FW 2.0 and full Exchange server support, Apple has taken a big step in courting industry (in fact, Apple had an extensive industry deployment pilot program before the release of the new firmware). Additional steps will follow. Developers will release DB apps. Microsoft will release an Office for iPhone. The platform is a true platform now and will evolve quickly now that Apple knows it has a hit on its hands. I agree the UI does need some improvement (better sorting, cut/copy/paste, undo, etc.) and that's coming. Regarding hardware, things like user-swappable battery and flash memory may be useful for some, but there are also good reasons why they shied away from them.

Yeah, found out it was not for businesss owners the moment I had to switch my AT&T account from my businesss to a personal account. My CPA was not too happy with that and paying for the cell ph. account with the businesss check was an interesting one for my taxes this last year. Another reason why I had to switch back.
I do love what seems to be coming but, it always seems to be coming. Don't get me wrong... I'm almost a converter but there gotta be a few changes before I commit this time.

Jeff you are aware that FileMaker has discontinued FMP Mobile alltogether. I take it that is what you are using now on your HTC.
Personally discontuining FMP Mobile and focusing on Web Publushing DB's, i think was one of the worst decisions FileMaker ever made.
Really hope some developer sees this 'hole' and jumps in to make a DB application for the iPhone using SQLite (which is the standard DB Engine on iPhone) that syncs with FileMaker DB's

I emailed Dataviz about a month age. They make Smartlist togo, a very powereful database much like Microsoft's Access. They said that they were interested in looking at the iPhone SDK to port their software to the iPhone. I haven't heard anything from them yet. I will try to get an updated status report tonight. I really miss not having a DB on the iPhone.

Dataviz is nice stuff. I use that myself too on my HTC and my old Sony Clie (yeah, have that too). If they made something that would be sweet. But, I'd like to not have to have 4 DB's for my data. A Filemaker hookup sure would be awesome. Did not know that FMmobile was discontinued. That's a bummer.

Among other iambic, WebIS, Mobipocket (somewhere at the end of this year, these guys are utterly slow) ... and two other DB producers DataViz (SmartList ToGo) and Ilium Software (ListPro) so DDH Software could stay behind.

That's great news to hear. Hmmm... I think I'll wait till: a) the huge rush on the iPhone is over, b) there's a way to get it to be on my businesss account not a personal account (need to hassle AT&T on that one).
Though, I'm happy to hear Dataviz is getting involved they had a great hookup to FMpro on the Palm that worked pretty slick. Plus maybe all my DB's I have on my Clie will port over and I'll only have to have one device. ;-)

That's kind of a bummer. Amazing the one app/tool that's not available for this large storage, high-power device is a DB...

Not exactly a FileMaker hookup in the sense that everything's possible, but it's a first step.
Some Swedish developer has developed CSV Touch and what it does is actually very simple, it converts a CSV file in a searchable and sortable DB for the iPhone. So you could export a FileMaker DB (or any DB for that matter) to a CSV file and then import it to the iPhone for offline reference.
